Lemme Paint You A Picture

Amara's a huge fan of Jon and Kate Plus 8.

A side note: I kinda think Kate is a bit evil. God bless her for having eight kids. But she kinda gets on my nerves. And apparently I'm not the only one that feels that way. Take a look at the blog of an alleged family member...

When she saw them have tea at the American Girl Place, she begged to have lunch at the cafe. Even though it was an activity she had passed upon the last time we hit Chicago.

So when the girls on the show painted their own pottery, Amara insisted on creating her own work of art.

My dear friend, Carol, sent Amara a generous gift. And with it, I took Amara to our local pottery place.

Amara sat impatiently while the salesgirl explained the process to a very clueless Mom2Amara.

My five year old chose colors in a matter of seconds. Picking out a pottery piece took even less time.

Amara was immediately drawn to a tea cup and saucer.

When it was all said and done, there was more colors on the set then in a rainbow.

And she was very proud.

Me? I chose a simple six inch plate. I didn't want to jinx myself the first time out the gate.

How hard could this be?

I sat down for what ended up being a very long afternoon.

I decided to sponge paint the plate a very cheerful yellow. When I was done, the plate looked more dirty than filled with sunshine.

But I moved on.

I found a rubber stamp in the shape of Mickey Mouse's hand. The Disser in me couldn't stand it. I had to have it.

What should have been an easy task for any second grader ended up looking like Amara's first handprint project.

I had a red blog on a poop stained plate.

The perfectionist in me couldn't have it.

So I grabbed a brush and painted the entire plate red. A deep red to hide my lack of artistic abilities.

Then I stenciled the slimmest, simplest heart I could find. In black. I figured I could fill it in if I really screwed it up.

And here's the finished product.

I can't say I'm unhappy with it. But I can say I think anyone's child could make a better plate...

  1. Hi! First time reader here...just wanted to let you know that I also think Kate is evil much of the time. I think she should lighten up on her husband and just let the chaos that is her life overtake her. I do applaud her for her organization and I certainly couldn't handle 8 kids like she does, but I think she'd be a much happier person if she would Just. Lighten. Up. So there!

  3. I don't watch the show, but we do the pottery stuff a few times a year. even with that, I still end up with not-so-professional stuff.

oh well. at least the kids have fun!

I bet your plate will turn out good. having it fired and glazed makes a world of difference.

  4. I like the plate! I love painting pottery, but it IS a little comlicated! If there's a Painted Penguin in your area, you might want to try that instead... its still painting ceramics, but you don't have to fire it, you just paint it with regular paint, and then they put some instant glaze on it and you can take it home the same day.
As for Jon and Kate... yeah I agree, Kate is kind of a nut! She's very, very strict. I would think that, if you had eight very young children, you'd HAVE to loosen up a little, to avoid losing your mind! Oh well, what can ya do?
