running 5:06 a.m.

I fell asleep Tuesday evening on the sofa at 8 o'clock.

By the time I rose from the sofa, it was already past 11 o'clock. So I showered and got ready for bed. I was snoring the second my head hit the pillow.

So how is it I still slept through my alarm this morning?

I didn't leave the Yellow House until 5:06 a.m. And amazingly, traffic was heavier than what I normally experience a half hour earlier. I was a grumpy mom when I arrived at work.

So imagine my surprise when I read the USA Today cover story on early commuters. There seems to be a growing number of us. And everyone's taking notice. Restaurants and coffee shops are opening their doors earlier. Publishers are pushing up deadlines to get newspapers on doorsteps before we leave for our workplaces.

Apparently this trend is putting a strain on families. Some couples stay in different rooms so the early riser does not wake the other. And others are going to bed as early as 9 o'clock.

Me? I'd rather go to bed at 11 o'clock and run on empty the next day. Coffee is my friend. Why? Because many nights Dad2Amara does not arrive home until 9 or so. And I'd like to spend some time with my better half. I don't want to miss Amara's bath time. And I haven't trained the dog to read Amara her bedtime story yet.

So exhausted state is my own doing. But it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make so that I can be with my family.

How about you? What time do you leave the house in the morning? Ever run late at 5:06 a.m.?
today's good: A good friend is being honored today and I get to go to her luncheon!
today's bad: Work. More work.

  1. I wake up at 5:55 am & leave the house by 6:15ish to be at work at 7am....that is when I do go to work! Surprisingly, the traffic is already getting heavy at that time.

  2. At my house, my husband is the commuter. He gets up at 4:30 so that he can prepare for trial each morning. We don't sleep in separate rooms, but sometimes I think that we might as well!

  3. DH is an earlier riser... he wakes me to make his breakfast as he showers, usually about 5:45 a.m. He then drives to work (about a 20-30 min commute) and I sit down to blog. :)

  4. My alarm blares at 6:15 am but I don't actually get up until about 6:35 am. The snooze button is my friend. I frequently go to bed at 1 am, sometimes 2, because after the kids go to bed (around 8 pm), I do chores for about an hour, then I sit my ass on the chair and write like a maniac until my eyes get crossed and my fingers bleed.

  5. Since my office is on flextime, I used to leave the house at 9, but now I leave earlier at...8:30. So I'm still completely dead to the world when you and Highmaintenancemom start your day.

  6. Highmaintenancemom, it only takes you 20 minutes to get ready for work? I am jealous.

  7. oh you don't want to see what I look like when I go to work! It's not even said one day that I looked like a maid and she was not kidding or being funny, she was completely serious!

  8. My husband gets up at 5:30, but he doesn't really commute, he walks the dog, runs or bikes, lucky, huh? The scream "Moooooooommy!" from the kids' room is my alarm every morning. For a year and a half now, I have been working from home. Gets lonely, but I will take that over commute any day. Oh yeah, I don't sleep until 12:30 or 1am, so I rely on caffeine too.

  9. Karmela - Yea, I've done traffic in Atlanta and Chi-town and it's nowhere like traffic here. Traffic here is quite tame. And yes, the snooze button is my friend too. Actually it's more like a lifeline these days.

HMM - I find it hard to believe you wake up at 5:55 a.m.!! You? :)

Makita - Tell DH to make his own breakfast so you can get a little more shut eye!

Cindy - I'll trade ya my commute! Actually commuting wouldn't be so bad if I had a train or something. I could at least multitask that way!
