up and at 'em early

Can you guess who was up at 6 o'clock this morning, watching and hoping for a day off from school?

Yup. That's Amara bundled up on the sofa.

And that brings me to my gripe. And it's not about my daughter.

Many school districts in my area closed their doors today because of the sub zero wind chill.

It's the coldest I think it's ever been in Amara's lifetime. (Although I still remember vividly the 50 below zero wind chill that hit Chicago when I lived out there. Oye.)

And to make matters worse for an already worried Mom2Amara, all 300 kindergartners are boarding buses and driving 30 minutes downtown for a field trip. All I keep hearing "black ice" and "frigid cold." And all I can think of is Amara's bus breaking down and having no heat. Or Amara's bus parking two blocks from the theatre and her walking in these temps.

Am I being an over protective mom?

I'm dressing her in layers. I'm making sure her skin's covered when she steps outdoors.

But what else can I do?

I feel helpless. I can't protect her when she's not at my side.

And I don't think this is a you-have-to-be-able-to-let-go situation.

It's 20 degrees below zero wind chill people!

  1. 50 below in Chicago?

It was 60 below in Rockford ... 1994 ... I remember it well.

  2. We were an hour delayed today and it's cold here but not that cold. I'm sure the kids will be fine...they don't seem to ever be cold.

  3. Schools were closed here today too. I walked to the subway and I felt like my legs were going to break off my body. Not fun.
